Why does Firefox still suck in Lion?

Firefox sucks on Mac OS X Lion. It’s been known to be bloated and sluggish on the Mac for years, but the failures of Firefox are becoming much more apparent as they fail to keep up with Chrome and Safari in terms of OS integration. Specifically, the horrible and ugly legacy scrollbars that all current builds of Firefox are stuck with makes me wince. Yes, even the alpha builds are using the old, janky interface instead of complying with Lion’s new in-content scrollbars.

Lion was released on July 20th of this year. Over four months have passed since the consumer release of the OS, and Firefox still looks awful. Just as annoying, Firefox doesn’t understand any of the swiping gestures on the Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse. Chrome and Safari — the Webkit options — are completely showing Firefox up in this department. It’s more than a little embarrassing at this point. Honestly, it frustrates me to use Firefox at all. I wouldn’t even consider making it my go-to browser as it stands now.
I hope the Mozilla team finds its way again. At one point, they were making the best browser on the planet. Now, it’s pretty much rubbish when we have two other great options to choose from. Apparently, faster releases don’t make for timely improvements for them. It just might be time for a restructuring before the project implodes.
