Of iPods & Backups

One of the best parts of buying a new iPod is the feeling of nonchalance for the well-being of your old iPod. For me, the best use I have for my 30 GB 5th generation iPod is as another back-up device. If you’re not familiar with yours truly, I am fucking paranoid when it comes to backing up my data. Along with keeping a clone of my drive locally, I keep an ever-growing collection of DVDs at a friends house as an off-site back-up. Having yet another drive for all of my purchased music, class projects, and photo collection is another layer of security.

Thanks to my crazy data hoarding, when I screwed the pooch with my permissions earlier in the year, I retained roughly 95% of all of my data. Unfortunately, my cloned disk failed, but my paranoia was rewarded with the vast majority of my data residing across town and on other local media.

The moral of this story is “If you can use it to back-up, you should use it to back-up. It might just come in handy one of these days.”
