Same Difference

I am really digging Bag of Bones. However, I have come to the realization that I like it because I like The Shining. That is to say, they are essentially the same goddamn story. King moved things around a little bit. The main character doesn’t technically have a child, and his wife is dead. Nonetheless, Bag of Bones contains the following similarities to The Shining:

  • The male protagonist is a writer
  • The child is smart for his/her age
  • It involves a haunted house, possessed by ghosts.
  • The main character has a falling out with an old friend.
  • It takes place away from the main character’s main house of residence.
  • The main character flips out at the end, but everything turns out okay.
The book is quite a few years old now. I’m sure most people have already drawn this conclusion, but I found it interesting. All in all, I still really like the book. King is a fantastic writer.
