Situation: Normal. All Fucked Up.

Today there was a small thunderstorm. I decided it would be a good idea to turn off my computer before the storm hit. I shut down my computer just as I always do. I closed out all of my programs, and then I shut down my machine from the Apple menu. I unplugged my computer, and went about my day. When the storm had passed, I plugged my computer back in, and I turned it on. I went to get a soda, and when I returned, my log-in screen was staring at me. Everything was normal…

Or so I thought.

After logging in, I tried to launch something from Spotlight. To my surprise, no search results would show up. I assumed it didn’t launch properly, so I relaunched Spotlight from the Activity Monitor. It still wouldn’t resolve any search term, but I chalked that up to a screwed up configuration. The next thing I noticed was I had a lot of old files sitting on my Desktop. Files I had deleted days ago. Something was not right with my computer. I went to a Finder window to get to my main harddisk, but it wasn’t there. Turns out, I was running off of my bootable SuperDuper! backup. FUCK!

I shut everything down, and I decided to unplug my firewire drive in hopes that my main harddisk would boot up as usual. No such luck was to be had. Upon boot, I would get the CLICK-CLICK-CLICK of death, and then shown a question mark on a folder icon. This made me sad. I booted back into my SuperDuper! install, and then began burning up-to-date copies of my files to DVDs for good measure. As of right now, I am finishing up that task. After this is completed, I will be screwing around with my TechTool Deluxe disk in hopes of getting my harddisk healthy enough to wipe completely before shipping it off to Apple. By the way, the reason why Spotlight refused to find anything is because I had turned off indexing of my back up drive to avoid unnecessary use.

Moral of the story is: Back up, back up, back up.
